Director’s Note:
When I was 10 years old my mother gave me a copy of Little Women (Unabridged) by Louisa May Alcott and made sure I knew how much she had loved the book when she read it at that age. She was so excited to pass this particular experience from mother to daughter. Much to her irritation it languished on the shelf for a few years but when I finally picked it up around age 14, I inhaled it. I wanted to be Jo. I was so proud to share her nickname. I couldn’t get enough of the characters. I watched the Katherine Hepburn 1933 movie and then the 1994 Winona Ryder. I was deeply emotionally invested in the characters as so many readers have been for over 150 years. When I re-read the book this past fall, I was struck by how much I remembered and how easy it still was to read regardless of how very old fashioned it is. Jo (and by extension Louisa May Alcott) was so far ahead of her time, and her desires and her dreams are so universal and recognizable that it is difficult not to be affected and root for her as a reader.

Before we started rehearsals, I would have said that Little Women was a show about identity and finding your place in the world even if you have to force society to see you the way you want to be seen…. And it is about that…. But as I spent the month of January rehearsing this surprisingly beautiful show with the most remarkable group of students both onstage and off and my truly fantastic collaborators LaQuet Sharnell Pringle, Justin Fischer and Alex Taylor, (and design coordinators and support faculty) what I have come to realize is that, at least our version of this show, is also about the healing powers of love, respect and compassion. Throughout this process the love and emotional availability in the room was palpable and made these increasingly difficult times easier to endure. Our rehearsals felt like a balm for our collective soul, and I believe that feeling and message are baked into this production. I will miss it and this fantastic group of humans once this is over, but I hope everyone who sees it will feel inspired to bring some of the love they see modeled onstage into their own lives and then out to the world beyond the bounds of this theatre. Thank you for bearing witness to the work of these amazing students and please know in these increasingly dark and scary times that you have community, someone loves you deeply and that you belong
