Steve Pearson

About
Steve Pearson has directed and acted professionally in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. He has performed in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco with Malashock Dance Company and Peter Kyle Dance, worked with performance artist Eleanor Antin on several tours, and directed a number of original operas including TRILLIUM by jazz great Anthony Braxton. In 1982 he began 12 years of intensive work with Tadashi Suzuki. In Japan he acted in NIPPON WARS, CLYTEMNESTRA, and as Claudius in HAMLET. Steve is a co-founder with Robyn Hunt of Pacific Performance Project/East and under that umbrella has directed DAYS AND NIGHTS WITHIN, MIZU NO EKI, END OF THE ROPE at LaMama and in Romania, MYRA’S WAR, and the trilogy BALANCE, GRAVITY and FLIGHT. He also conceived, wrote and played Thomas in OPIUM directed by Kenji Suzuki and performed in Seattle, Tokyo and Kanazawa, Japan. He played Hooke in Peter Kyle’s SKIPPY-O’S DREAM at On the Boards in Seattle and performed in the premiere of Peter Kyle Dance at the Henry Street Settlement in New York. Other professional work includes playing LJ in Nancy Bannon’s DRINKING INK at the 92nd Street Y, Firs in THE CHERRY ORCHARD SEQUEL at LaMama, and directing the premiere of FLAGS by Jane Martin produced by the Mixed Blood Theater and the Guthrie. He has designed sound for the majority of his directing projects and created sound scores for all P3/East’s original Shogo Ohta-inspired slow tempo pieces, most recently the first performance in June of Robyn Hunt’s AM ABEND, a dance/theatre piece for 33 performers. Steve was Professor of Acting in the Department of Theatre at the University of California, San Diego, where he became head of the graduate acting program, subsequently headed the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of Washington for eleven years and ran the MFA acting program at the University of South Carolina, where he is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He is delighted to be working with the METAMORPHOSES creative team.
